> Miners of Ukraine, photographs by Youry Bilak

Youry Bilak has been immersed in Ukrainian culture since childhood, inherited from his parents who fled to France after the Second World War. Alongside a career as a dancer, singer and actor, he devoted himself to his passion: photography and he set out to discover Hutsuls in the Carpathians.

With Miners of Ukraine, Youry Bilak offers a selection of works from his campaigns in the mines of western and eastern Ukraine. These images, produced between 2005 and 2012, are an invitation to reflect on the still current reality of coal production in a country unjustly scarred by war. This exhibition is also a sign of solidarity by the Mining History Centre towards the great mining nation of Ukraine.

Exhibition Miners of Ukraine, photographs by Youry Bilak from 21 October 2023 to 10 March 2024

In a nod to this exhibition, five photographs by Youry Bilak can be seen in the shower room at 9-9bis in Oignies until Sunday 03 December.
